About the manufacturer

Claris International Inc. is the American company that develops Claris FileMaker, a low-code database and custom business application platform. Headquartered in Santa Clara, California, Claris is a wholly owned subsidiary of Apple Inc. and was formed in 1987 to run the application software business separately Apple's hardware and operating systems.

The company bought FileMaker Nashoba Systems in 1988 and released FileMaker Pro 1.0 in 1990. In 1998 it was renamed FileMaker Inc., focusing on what had become its flagship product, and in August 2019 it restored the Claris International Inc. name — in the same announcement that disclosed the acquisition of Italian company Stamplay, the integration platform behind Claris Connect. According to Claris, FileMaker has been the foundation of business solutions for more than 40 years. The CEO role is held by Ryan McCann.

Claris technology starts a single solution file carrying the relational schema, interface, scripts and permissions: the app built in FileMaker Pro is hosted by FileMaker Server or FileMaker Cloud and consumed in the browser, on the desktop and on mobile devices with no reimplementation. Integration with external systems runs through the Data API and OData, both REST, plus ODBC/JDBC and external SQL sources such as MySQL, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL.
