The Altair Seam is used to predict noise and interior vibrations in automobiles, aircraft and cabins of construction equipment, as well as the irradiated noise of ships and the vibroacoustic environments of spacecraft. Other applications include machine noise, industrial noise and building acoustics.
Seam includes a full implementation of statistical energy analysis (SEA). The complex dynamic system analyzed is divided into a set of substructures and acoustic elements. The modes of each substructure and acoustic element are grouped into SEA subsystems. The energy flow between the different subsystems is proportional to the modal energies of the subsystems and the coupling factors. The Seam program calculates all the necessary coupling factors and performs a power balance for each subsystem. The resulting equations are resolved to the modal energy and response of each subsystem.

Seam led the way in energy statistical analysis software. Developed in 1980 for infrastructure noise studies in submarines, seam quickly branched out to all sectors. They were the first commercial SEA software to be used in the marine, aerospace and automotive industries.
