Arcserve Unified Software is quick and simple when it comes to virtual server backup software. It can provide agentless backup for VMware and Hyper-V host environments, including: Enables single-pass server backup software all virtual machines, without the need to install software agents Only backup of changed blocks Integrates with the Hyper-V API and VMware (for VM discovery, events, vStorage, etc.) Supports VMware vSphere (VSAN) Hyper-V Server 2012 and 2012 R2 (CSV) Consistent Application Backup (Exchange, SQL, AD, etc.) and purge the transaction log Easily recover individual files and folders each VM Centralized Management of the UDP Console node, group, and plan.

Does UDP have agentless virtual server protection?

Arcserve Unified offers comprehensive server backup software for virtual or physical environments. For virtual hypervisors, UDP can offer host/agent-based backups. This allows you to back up a single pass of all Windows and non-Windows VMs, without the need to install software agents on each VM. In addition, Arcserve UDP leverages VSS snapshot technology to help ensure consistent backups of file systems and applications. You can also restore the original or different hypervisor, as well as the granular file and the Exchange mailbox level.

Can you explain the Agentless Backup Transport Method?

With VMware, Arcserve Unified supports some backup transport methods. Using its VDDK apd, VMware has developed backends that allow efficient access to data stored on ESX/ESXi servers. It is very important to note that this only works with the paid version of the software. Arcserve can access these data paths (called advanced transports) through the virtual disk library.

Depending on the environment, these transport methods provide valuable options depending on protected storage and the network. Arcserve UDP supports 3 transport methods discussed below: LAN (NBD), SAN, and HotAdd.

NBD (network block device) or NBDSSL (encrypted) In this mode, the ESX/ESXi host reads data storage and sends it over a network to the backup server. Transport SAN In this mode, the virtual disk library retrieves information an ESX/ESXi host about the layout of VMFS LUNs and, using this information, reads data directly the SAN or iSCSI LUN a virtual disk resides. This is a fast transport method for applications deployed on an ESX/ESXi host connected to SAN. HOT ADD HotAdd allows protected virtual machines to be mounted on the backup proxy server.
