REPLACEMENT OF THE COASTAL PROTECTION MANUAL (SPM)

CEM is the modern replacement of the Coast Protection Manual, the basis for coastal engineering practices in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and most standard engineering projects worldwide. It incorporates contributions from experts/professionals from around the world and the latest research techniques, procedures and information. CEM offers wider coverage of all aspects of coastal engineering than SPM. New sections have been added in port navigation and design, dredging and disposal, structural repair and rehabilitation, beach restoration, wetlands and low energy coast protection, cohesive backs, risk analysis, field instrumentation, numerical simulation, engineering process and other topics.

Editions

CEM Professional Edition (CEM-PE) is the personal computer version of CEM and is a fully interactive multimedia feature, containing programmed formulas, live/interactive graphics and animated images. CEM-PE is a Windows-based CD-ROM document that incorporates all the tools and procedures used to plan, design, build, and maintain coastal projects. CEM is a comprehensive and modern guide, including the basic principles of coastal processes, methods for calculating coastal engineering planning and design parameters, and guidance on how to formulate and conduct studies in support of coastal flooding, coastal protection and navigation projects.

CEM Standard Edition (SE) contains all material in CEM-PE, except the ability to use the scheduled sample problems and equations. This version is designed for general use as a reference or instructional material and has a substantially lower price.  CEM-SE is sold only with a hardware key.

CONTENT

The Coastal Engineering Manual contains six parts containing more than 3,000 pages if printed. Both CEM-PE and CEM-SE replicate the entire manual produced by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and contain:

Part I - Introduction. This part describes the scope and applicability of the material, discusses the coastal diversity of oceans and lakes, highlights the history of coastal engineering, describes the content of the manual, and provides help in using the electronic version.

Part II - Coastal Hydrodynamics. This part contains 8 chapters on water wave mechanics, meteorology and wave weather, nearshore wave estimation, surf zone hydrodynamics, water levels and long waves, tidal cove hydrodynamics, port hydrodynamics and hydrodynamic analysis and design conditions.

Part III - Coastal sediment processes. This part contains 6 chapters on coastal sediment properties, coastal sediment transport, cross-shore sediment transport processes, wind-blown sediment transport, erosion, transport and deposition of cohesive sediments, and sediment transport outside the surf zone.

Part IV - Coastal Geology. This part contains 3 chapters on coastal geological environments, classification and morphology and morphodynamics.

Part V - Coastal Project Planning and Design. This part contains 7 chapters on the planning and design process, site characterization, coastal protection projects, navigation projects, sediment management in coves/ports and coastal engineering for environmental improvement.

Part VI - Drawing of the Elements of the Coastal Project. This Part contains 8 chapters on introduction to coastal design element design, coastal structural types and functions, site-specific design conditions, materials and construction aspects, design fundamentals, reliability-based design of coastal structures, design of specific design elements, and design for repair, rehabilitation, and modification.

SBAS INCLUDED WITH CEM-PE

Also included free on cem-pe CD, is the SBAS model. The SBAS provides a framework for formulating, documenting, and calculating sediment budgets, including estimation, uncertainty, and multi-entry representation. Part V of CEM-PE includes comprehensive information on calculating sediment budgets using SBAS. Because CEM relies on user access to recent versions of SBAS, Veritech provides SBAS.

User environment

CEM-PE or CEM-SE is written in C++, allowing fast operating speed. The basic layout of the screen is a tree view control panel for left-handers with a right-handed panel for HTML and applets that make up the "Dynamic Document".

The CEM-PE or CEM-SE user interface consists of an integrated set of windows, tools, menus, toolbars, and directories that allow the user to move easily across the CEM, using rigorous cross-indexing and search capabilities to access the desired information. There are hot-keys throughout the manual that lead the user to an interactive toolbox of coastal engineering design and analysis codes (CEDAS). Many equations in CEM-PE are programmed, but with the purchase of CEDAS a full range of sophisticated models are available at the touch of the mouse.

CEM Security Options

Option 1

CEM can be shipped with security protection software designed for installation on a single PC. Upon completion of the installation, the first attempt to access the software will result in your PC producing a unique ID. Call or email Veri-Tech, Inc. with your serial number and unique ID to get an appropriate unique unlock number. Software security is provided at no additional cost.

Option 2

CEM can be protected using a Sentinel hardware key. This device, called dongle, must be connected to the computer where the software is being used OR on another device connected to the same network as the computer you are using (that is, a server or other connected computer). Sentinel software is installed during the CEM installation process. Keys with multiple licenses are no different from a single license key, except for the number of licenses scheduled for that key. The Sentinel device tracks the number of concurrent CEM users. If the number of users exceeds the total number of licenses purchased, a message is provided to "extra" users that they should expect access to. CEM must be installed on each "client" machine that will potentially use these products.

All dongles use a USB interface. Greater flexibility is achieved by purchasing separate keys for a single user in place of a multi-user key. For example, suppose you have 3 user licenses and 3 single-user keys. If a colleague is traveling, he can take one of the keys, leaving 2 keys for use in the company network. This allows the traveler to use the product in the field without having to connect back and connect to the company network to get permission to use the software. Purchasing a 3-user key requires all users to be connected to the company network to gain access to the software.
