Stromasys' Charon-AXP family of products, including Charon-AXP Plus, is a layer of emulation between the Intel platform and a customer's legacy operating system and applications. It runs OpenVMS and Tru64 operating systems, layered products and applications in their original binary form.
Because emulation has significant overhead (sometimes hundreds of x86/x64 instructions to emulate a sequence of just a few Alpha CPU instructions), it has always been a challenge to achieve the level of performance of the fastest physical Alpha systems manufactured by DEC in the 2000s and satisfy the most demanding customers. Stromasys is now launching Charon-AXP Plus to meet the replacement of state-of-the-art Alpha systems.
Technically, Charon-AXP Plus is a significantly redesigned and improved Charon solution that is much closer to hosting hardware. The bare-metal approach aims to overtake a physical AlphaServer ES45 with 1GHz AXP CPUs - and address the high level of the DEC AlphaServer family.
Charon-AXP Plus differs from the regular Charon-AXP family in the way it manages hosting hardware resources. By providing Guest Operating Systems (OpenVMS and Tru64) with direct access to hardware memory management peripherals hosting, Network, Disk I/O, and Fibre Channel, Charon-AXP Plus significantly increases performance for the most demanding end users.
The host server requirements are currently strict. Host hardware minimums are Intel v3 or v4 CPUs (3Ghz or faster) with chipsets compatible with Intel VT-x and VT-d virtualization technologies, and legacy boot options (BIOS): NVMe flash storage (M.2 or PCIe) 750 Series is recommended), Broadcom 57xx network adapters, LSI 92xx or Megaraid SATA/SAS storage controllers and Emulex Fibre Channel controllers up to 8 Gbps.
