What is DeskRule ?

DeskRule complements and extends Windows Search. If your file is there, it will be found.

Search anywhere

Wherever you have files, DeskRule can find them. Search your hard drive, external drives, network, but also on mobile phones and cameras, zipfolders, FTP, OneDrive (cloud) and all other virtual shell folders.

Fast and reliable search

DeskRule will query your Windows Search Index (WDS) and MFT to find your files quickly. When WDS suffers, DeskRule will switch to a backup search mode to deliver the search results.

Rich file properties

300 unique system properties are available to be used as search parameters, both simple (name, modification date, file content) and more advanced as Evaluation, Tags, Authors, even GPS by longitude.

Powerful search expressions

Search rules are powerful individually, supporting wildcards and regular expressions, and can be combined into complex search instructions (Boolean algebra) to help you locate files accurately.

Automatic viewing with DeskRule

All search criteria are shown as details (columns) to help you understand the results. The most popular document types (Office, PDF, media, images) can be viewed as in Windows Explorer.

Integrated shell

Browse search results in a panel identical to Windows Explorer, supporting drag and drop, shell context menu, thumbnails, content filters (IFilter), and other plugins. Legacy shell column handlers are supported.

Lowercase paste of resources

Deskrule uses few system resources. It doesn't keep search indexes separate - it connects to your system's WDS (Windows Search) index.

Customize searches

Managing 300 system properties is not an easy task, but you can save search rule layouts and even criteria for any search you repeat frequently.

Easy to use

There are 4 search modes, from dead easy to super advanced. You can choose ease of use or search for a more refined search control. The GUI is Spartan and keyboard friendly.

Offline catalog search

Catalogue once, then find and view documents, photos, movies on external devices (USB discs, DVDs, CDs) while disconnected. Find your files offline and find out where they are stored.

Work with search results

Manage files within the search results pane. Open, view, rename, filter, and select, delete, copy, export information as text. Open the folder containing items for more file management.
