9Dropbox is designed with multiple layers of protection, including secure data transfer, encryption, network configuration, and application-level controls, which are distributed across a secure, scalable infrastructure.

Dropbox users can access files and folders at any time computers, web browsers, and mobile devices, or third-party apps connected to Dropbox. Each interface has security settings and features that process and protect user data, while allowing ease of access. All of these clients connect to secure servers to provide access to files, allow sharing of items with others, and update linked devices when files are added, changed, or d.

The Dropbox architecture consists of these services:

Encryption service and application

This service handles all processing for Dropbox apps. Each file is divided into blocks, and each block is fragmented and encrypted using strong cipher. Only blocks that have changed are synchronized. When changes are made, new or modified blocks are processed and transferred to the storage service.

Metadata service

Basic information about user data (including names and file types), called metadata, is maintained in its own discrete storage service, separate file blocks. This metadata serves as an index in user accounts and is fragmented and replicated as needed to meet performance and high availability requirements.

Storage service

With this service, the contents of users' files are stored in encrypted blocks. Each encrypted file block is retrieved based on its hash value, and an extra layer of encryption is placed on all blocks of files at rest using strong cipher.

Notification service

This is a side-by-party service dedicated to monitoring changes made to Dropbox accounts. There is no storage or transfer of metadata or file data. Clients establish sequential connection to this service and expect a change. The service, in turn, signals changes to the relevant customers.

Both dedicated internal security staff and third-party security experts protect these services by identifying and mitigating risks and vulnerabilities. These groups conduct regular security testing and audits on applications, networks, and other security parameters to ensure the security of our back-end network. In addition, our responsible disclosure policy promotes the discovery and disclosure of security vulnerabilities.

Data centers

Dropbox enterprise and production systems are housed in data centers of third-party companies and managed service providers located in the United States. These third-party service providers are responsible for physical, environmental, and operational security controls at the borders of Dropbox infrastructure. Dropbox is responsible for the logical, network, and application security of our infrastructure housed in third-party data centers.

Full referral confidentiality

For the ends we control (desktop and mobile devices) and for modern browsers, we use strong ciphers with support for Perfect Forward Secrecy (PFS) encryption. By implementing this encryption, we have made sure that our SSL private key cannot be used to decrypt past internet traffic. This adds additional protection to Dropbox encrypted communications, essentially disconnecting each session all previous sessions. Cryptography

Dropbox data at rest is encrypted using the 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). To protect data in transit between Dropbox applications (for desktop, mobile, API, or the web) and our servers, Dropbox uses Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) / Transport Layer Security (TLS) encryption for data transfer, creating a secure tunnel protected by advanced AES encryption standards of 128-bit or higher.

Key management

Dropbox's key management infrastructure is built with operational, technical, and procedural security controls, with very limited direct access to keys. The generation, exchange, and storage of encryption keys are distributed in decentralized processes.

Assignment of certificates

Dropbox assigns certificates to our desktop and mobile customers. Certificate assignment is an additional check to ensure that the service you are connecting to is actually the one you claim to be, not an impostor. We use this feature as protection against other measures that skilled hackers may try to use to spy on your activities.

Control and visibility:

We've developed a variety of tools that enable administrators and IT teams to customize Dropbox Business to the specific needs of their organizations. Dropbox Business administration and its various user interfaces provide a true toolbox with visibility controls and features.

Identity and access management

Integration with directory services

Simplify the inclusion or exclusion of users by adding and removing them automatically the existing Active Directory or LDAP integration protocol or through one of your identity management providers.

Two-step verification

This security feature is optional, but highly recommended, and adds an extra layer of protection to Dropbox users' accounts. Once two-step verification is turned on, Dropbox will require your password and a six-digit security code when accessing your account or linking a new device.

Two Dropbox accounts

Sharing controls and files

Administrators can set up shared links for team members and use the Administration section to disable links.

Folder and shared file permissions

View-only permission for shared folders. With this type of access, members of a shared folder can always see the latest versions of the files, but they cannot edit them.

Expiration dates for shared links. This feature allows owners to create passwords to enforce limits on who can access shared link content.

Recovery and version history

All Dropbox Business customers can restore lost files and recover previous versions of files in an unlimited way, ensuring that changes to important data can be tracked and retrieved.

Administrative actions

Monitor account usage: See third-party apps and linked devices, as well as the web sessions that are active. Control team data: End active sessions, local copies of files, and revoke access to third-party applications in users' accounts. As a proactive security measure, administrators can reset passwords for both specific users and the entire team.

Unlink devices

Computers and mobile devices connected to user accounts can be unlinked by the administrator through the Administration section. In the case of computers, when the link is canceled, the authentication data is removed, and the administrator has the option to local copies of files the next time the computer comes online.

Visibility

Comprehensive audit records

Dropbox Business admins can report activity at any time for some types of events, filtered by date range. Reports are available to users individually or for team-to-team accounts and can be downloaded in CSV format or integrated with your security and event management information (SIEM) tools for analysis with the Dropbox Business API.

User activity reports contain this information for administrators:
