What is Geo-Slope AIR/W?

AIR/W simulates the problems of air/groundwater interaction within porous material such as soil and rock. AIR/W enables analyses ranging from simple, single-phase air transfer analysis to complex air-to-water coupling systems.

The true power of AIR/W is unlocked when coupled to TEMP/W to model convection heat flows and density-dependent air flows. This type of analysis is important for studying mine closures, acid rock drainage, or gas transfer.

Features of Geo-Slope AIR/W:

Density-dependent airflow

AIR/W can be integrated into temp/w to model air transfer via free convection. Density-driven air transfer is usually the dominant mechanism in systems subject to climatic influences such as seasonal variation in soil temperature.

Estimate material properties

The air conductivity function can be generated based on the conductivity of dry soil air and functions chosen by the user of water volumetric content. The estimation process requires only fundamental soil information to name the conductivity of dry soil air.

Heat transfer by convection forces

Air/W and TEMP/W were combined to model heat transfer by convection forces. This process usually controls the termal regime in coarse-grain materials with piles of rocky tailings, rip-rap on the face of hydraulic structures and touching layers of fine-grain (Fine-grain).

Geo-Slope AIR/W phase streams:

Air transfer analysis can be conducted using single phase material where only airflow is driven by pressure and gravity is seen. The phase material model dubs can also be used for coupling airflow to water transfer analysis.
