Many experiments and clinical trials are performed with few individuals. A low-potency study is a wasted effort if even the substantial treatment effects go unnoticed. When planning a study, therefore, you need to choose an appropriate sample size. Your decision depends on a number of factors, including how you expect your data to be disseminated, how much you are willing to risk to find a difference by chance, and how sure you are that your study will find the difference you seek if it exists.

Some programs question you what statistical form you want and how big is the effect you are looking for, so then tell you the sample size you should use. The problem with this approach is that very often you don't know what comes next. You want to outline a study with high detection power to small effects and with a very strict definition of statistical significance. But to do this you need many topics, more than you might think. StatMate shows you the possibilities and helps you understand tradeoffs in terms of risk and cost, so you can make sample decisions.

You also need to know if your completed experiments have enough power. If an analysis results in a "statistically significant" conclusion, it is very easy to interpret. But if the interpretations of the results are not statistically significant, it is more difficult. It is never possible to prove that a treatment had effect 0, because small differences can go unnoticed. StatMate shows the power of your design to detect several hypothetical differences.
