HUByx is the first step in measuring the propagation of potentially lethal pressure waves within the human body.
Key Features & Benefits
The HUByx model is based on the collection of CT scan slices from a 50th percentile man, where all visible organs were delineated on the slices. Stacking these contours created a volume for each organ, and then the volumes of the organs were combined into HyperMesh.
Several dynamic impacts were simulated and the material laws of the body parts were calibrated to reproduce the experimental results. Dynamic impacts vary in velocity, mass, and projectile geometry. For each case, a numerical curve was compared to a validation corridor.
Another phase of model validation dealt with burst testing. Merkle et al. measured the pressure within some organs of a trunk surrogate in a specific experimental setting. This test was reproduced and pressure curves were measured within the HUByx organs. The numerical model was considered validated for these loads.

Defense Industry
Ballistics: Instead of testing bulletproof products on plastiline or rubber blocks, it is possible to simulate their behavior directly on the human body, see how the pressure propagates after impacts, and study the difference in behavior depending on the location of the impact.
Explosion protection: It is also possible to optimize explosion protection equipment by simulating the effect of protections on the propagation of pressure inside the body.
Sports industry: With HUByx, you can study the behavior of the human body under different types of sports impacts. For example, it is possible to simulate the protection of a football helmet, the rear protection of a motorcyclist, a fencing board or a running shoe sole. Other examples include optimizing the tennis racket to reduce the force transmitted to the bones and tendons of the forearm.
