What is Inertia?

A mathematical inertia model for segmental inertia parameter values

Inertia is a mathematical inertia model developed by Fred Yeadon of Loughborough University that allows the determination of custom segmental inertia parameter values from anthropometric measurements.

The human body is modeled using 40 geometric solids that are specified by 45 anthropometric measurements. A solid 'stadium' is introduced to model the trunk segments using perimeter and width measurements. This procedure is more accurate than using elliptical disks of specified width and depth and allows a smaller number of these solids to be used. The values of the inertia parameters can be obtained for body models of up to 20 segments.

Instructions for taking correct, accurate and reliable anthropometric measurements (especially when the meter is not trained and experienced) are documented here.

Inertia Features

Subject and Session Data

The subject database allows the user to create, load, and navigate the subject database. Add and remove subjects, add and remove sessions.

Subject Metrics

The Subject Metrics tab allows the user to enter the measurements that were taken for a subject, such as the subject's weight (kg) and standing height (mm). There are also guides for the entry of anthropometric measurements of the trunk, arms, legs. The images on the screen illustrate the necessary measures.

Inertia Calculated Metrics

The Calculated Metrics tab is automatically populated when the Calc button is used. The metrics of the arms and legs on the left and right side of the head and torso and the average are calculated automatically.

All calculated values can be exported for use in Visual3D or other external programs.
