Lumion

Lumion is real-time rendering software for architects, engineers and designers, developed by Act-3D, that turns Revit, SketchUp, Archicad and Rhino models into photorealistic images, videos and 360 panoramas. Through LiveSync, design changes made in the CAD tool appear in the scene at once, and a library of over 8,000 objects and PBR materials removes the need for external assets. The line comes in three editions — Lumion View, Lumion Pro and Lumion Studio — for individual or team use.

What is Lumion?

Lumion is real-time rendering software for architects, engineers and interior designers, developed by Act-3D B.V., that turns 3D CAD and BIM models into photorealistic images, videos and 360 panoramas. The tool works on projects imported apps such as Revit, SketchUp, Archicad or Rhino: the scene is built with lighting, materials and vegetation while the rendered result appears instantly. Lumion replaces slow offline rendering workflows, where every tweak forces a full re-render, and removes the bottleneck between modeling the project and presenting it to the client at presentation quality. The line comes in three editions — Lumion View, Lumion Pro and Lumion Studio.

Key features

Lumion brings the tools to turn a raw model into a presentable scene into a single environment:

  • LiveSync: real-time sync with Revit, SketchUp, Archicad, Rhino, AutoCAD, Vectorworks, BricsCAD, FormIt and Allplan — CAD changes appear in the Lumion scene at once.
  • Real-time ray tracing: reflections, shadows and global illumination computed while the scene is navigated, without waiting for a final render.
  • Content library: over 8,000 ready objects and PBR materials, including vegetation, furniture, people and vehicles placed by drag and drop.
  • AI image upscaler: enlarges renders up to 16K with AI, producing high-resolution output without rendering everything at full size.
  • Image, video and 360 panorama output: exports stills, animations and immersive tours the same composed scene.
  • Lumion Cloud: publishes projects online so the client opens the presentation in a browser, included in the subscription.

Benefits

Lumion shortens the path between the technical model and the final presentation. Real-time rendering removes the wait between tweak and preview because ray tracing recomputes the scene continuously instead of reprocessing every frame scratch. LiveSync integration cuts rework: because the Revit or SketchUp model stays linked, a design change in the CAD updates the scene without re-exporting files. And the built-in library speeds assembly by removing the need to model or hunt for external assets — vegetation, furniture and people come ready to drag into the scene.

Who it is for

Lumion serves architecture, urban planning, landscape and interior design practices, plus freelancers who need to present projects with visual impact. An architect uses Lumion to show a home to the client in images before construction; an urban planning office builds a flythrough video of a masterplan; an interior designer generates 360 panoramas of a room for the client to explore in a browser.

Differentiators

Lumion favors speed and ease over technical setup: scene assembly is drag and drop and requires no knowledge of render engines or material nodes. The photogrammetric vegetation library and atmospheric effects place the project in context — sky, seasons, rain, lighting — without third-party libraries. Unlike offline render engines, the result appears in real time during composition, not only when processing ends.

System requirements

Lumion Pro and Lumion Studio run only on Windows 10 (64-bit, version 2004 or later) and Windows 11; Lumion View also has a macOS edition, inside SketchUp. The graphics card is the critical component: Act-3D measures the requirement by the PassMark G3DMark score, asking for at least 8,000 points (an NVIDIA GTX 1060 range) and recommending 14,000 points (an NVIDIA RTX 3060 range) for Pro. Minimum VRAM is 6 GB, with 10 GB recommended; 16 GB of RAM is required (32 GB recommended) and about 105 GB of free disk space. Activation is online and requires signing in to the Lumion account.

Editions and modules

The Lumion line has three editions. Lumion View is a lightweight plugin that renders inside SketchUp, Revit and Archicad, aimed at early design stages. Lumion Pro is the full standalone solution, with the complete library and every composition tool, licensed per named user. Lumion Studio is the top bundle, combining Lumion Pro as a floating license, Lumion View and full Lumion Cloud access, aimed at teams that share licenses. The former Standard edition was discontinued and its subscribers migrated to Lumion Studio.

How much does Lumion cost?

Lumion is licensed per named user in Lumion Pro and per floating license in Lumion Studio, on an annual or three-year subscription. There is no single list price because the investment depends on sizing: the edition chosen (View, Pro or Studio), the number of users or seats, the contract term (1 or 3 years) and whether it is a new purchase or a renewal.
