MEscope Visual SDM

Visual SDM helps you quickly evaluate workarounds for resonance problems by adding additional tools to the modal analysis capabilities of a Visual Modal package. The Structural Dynamics Modification (SDM) method allows you to examine the effects of a variety of potential structural modifications on the resonances of a structure without actually having to make the physical modifications.

What is MEscope Visual SDM?

Visual SDM helps you quickly evaluate workarounds for resonance problems by adding additional tools to the modal analysis capabilities of a Visual Modal package. The Structural Dynamics Modification (SDM) method allows you to examine the effects of a variety of potential structural modifications on the resonances of a structure without actually having to make the physical modifications.

The VT-540 Visual SDM calculates the effects of making physical modifications to a structure in its vibration modes. With SDM, FEA elements can be added to (or subtracted from) a structure model, and new structure modes are calculated. SDM commands use industry-standard finite elements. Finite elements are called FEA Objects in The MEscope.

Visual SDM key points:

1.     Count the number of modes using a Mode Indicator function

2.     New modes are calculated quickly that show the effects of various modifications

3.     Eat a modal residual (a modal shape component) for each mode and each measurement. Industry standard FEA elements. Physical modifications are modeled using industry-standard FEA elements

4.     Many cases "what if" rapid calculation allows many potential modifications to be explored

Visual SDM Features

Modifications modeled with SDM

  • Masses Point Masses modeling translational or rotational inertia
  • Springs and shock absorbers Translational springs and shockabsorbers that model axial forces, 3 DOF or 6 DOF
  • Sticks the properties of the cross section of the model
  • See the properties of the cross section and the inertias of the model
  • Triangular and quadrilateral plates modeling translational and rotational properties
  • Solid elements of tetrahedron, prism and brick
  • Tuned absorber (model a bulk spring damper to reduce vibration levels)
  • Substructure Couple multiple structures
  • Modal sensitivity, find the best solution among 1000 potential modifications

Modal Sensitivity Analysis

  • Answers the question "How much stiffness does it take to change a mode to a higher frequency?"
  • Answers the question "How much mass can be added without changing a very low frequency mode?"
  • Answers the question "How much joint stiffness is required to match multiple target EMA frequencies?"
  • Solution classifies 1000 modifications based on the difference between modified and target modal frequencies and damping
  • Modified and target modes, modified and target mode pairs can be selected for sorting solutions

Finite Element Analysis (FEA) at ME'scope

  • Element Library Uses an Industry Standard FEA Element Library
  • FEA Assistant fills the 3D model with FEA elements
  • Element Library Uses an Industry Standard FEA Element Library
  • Material and element properties, material properties, and user-defined elements saved with each project
  • FEA modes Normal modes (without damping) or complex modes (with damping) are calculated
  • Shape expansion FEA mode shapes can be used to expand DOFS in ODS and EMA mode shapes
  • Import and export FEA models and FEA modes imported and exported to NASTRAN, Ansys and other popular formats

FEA model update

  • FEA model the physical properties in an FEA model are updated so that your FEA modes more match EMA modes
  • Updated FEA properties: (Point mass, spring stiffness, viscous damping / Cross-section area of the rod and beam and inertias / Area of the cross-section of the rod and beam and inertias / elasticity of the material, density, poissons ratio)
  • Exhaustive search evaluates thousands of SDM solutions for closer matching of modal shapes
  • The local regions of a structure can be selected for FEA property update
  • Pairs in FEA and EMA mode are selected to sort the closest matches
  • Export of updated FEA model in popular FEA formats
