What is Mothership

You can think of Mothership as the commander of your web-based applications, which is in constant communication with all your environments. While it ensures that your applications are working properly and backs up your various resources at regular intervals, it also allows developers to synchronize their local machines with these backups, so they can always work in an environment that is more like production, staging, or any of their environments they want to work in.

Synchronize your environments

Often, keeping a local development copy synchronized with one web application in another can be a problem. While Git responds to the developer's problems with the application's source code, there are often many other features that are kept out of version control that make working on a project a real pain show. If a developer has been working on other things for a while or is switching between production and staging, for example, it can be difficult to keep up to date and be agile

Mothership provides its backups as a way for developers to synchronize resources.

Backups are great. They give them the peace of mind that if things go wrong, they will have something to fall back on. While this is fantastic, Mothership has put their backups up and running, offering them to developers as a way to sync with the app's various environments. Using a simple command-line tool that punches holes in space-time, your developer machine will look like production, staging, quality control, whatever it is in just a few seconds.

Mothership will sync one, some, or all of the following things based on your needs:

Directories and files

AWS S3 Buckets

Move your project to git commit at backup time

Gather Intel and Destroy Bugs

After you deploy your app, you may have a bug or two lurking. In larger applications, these errors can be hidden deep in the user experience. Your app will collect bugs from your app's client and server and report them back to Mothership, where they can be placed in groups and analyzed by your team. Once resolved, the team can mark it as such and move on.
