What is MVSP?

MVSP performs various types of analysis ordering: principal component analysis (PCA), principal coordinate analysis (PCO), and rectified correspondence/match analysis (CA/DCA). He also does canonical correspondence analysis (CCA), a highly popular technique in ecological studies.

You can also perform cluster analysis using 23 different distance or similarity measurements and seven clustering strategies. A dual cluster option allows you to produce dendrograms of variables and cases in one step, along with a copy of the original data array, sorted in the same order as the dendrograms. Restricted collation can also be performed so that the original input data order is maintained. Diversity indices can be calculated on the basis of ecological data; these include the Simpson, Shannon and Brillouin contents.

The number of cases and variables that can be analyzed is limited only by the amount of memory available for Windows (RAM and hard disk swap file), up to a maximum of 2 billion cases and variables.

MVSP Desktop

MVSP uses the KCS desktop metaphor. Spread your data, statistical results, and graphs as you study them, as well as paper on your desktop. It also has a notepad where it is possible to annotate ideas and observations. Try new charts, add new data, review the results, print or save only the ones you need. When you exit the MVSP, save the position and content of all windows on your desktop. Later, you can restore it to the same state. MVSP allows the user to pick up where they left off. Multiple desktops can be saved for different projects.

Graphics

Once your data is analyzed, you can plot the results directly. Select the sort axes you want to see and the scatter diagrams will be drawn. Graphical variable sets and cases can be drawn for AC results. Euclidean biplots of PCA results (with variables as vectors) can be produced, as well as biplots of environmental variables in CCA. Scree graphics can also be produced for PCA, PCO and CA/CCA. The dendrograms of the cluster analysis results are drawn automatically. These charts can be customized, with your favorite settings being saved for future use.

Scatter plots of the original variables can also be produced, as well as the box and moustache charts that summarize each variable. All charts have a zoom feature that allows you to zoom in on parts of the chart for easy viewing.

Other Resources

MVSP offers several data manipulation features, such as transforming, merging two or more data files, and converting to formats such as range. Data can be imported and exported to a variety of formats, including Lotus 1-2-3, Excel, Quattro, xBase, Paradox, Cornell Ecology Program format, and various plain text files.

Individual data cases can be assigned to groups. The group names are then printed on the output and dendrograms, and the groups are represented in the scatter diagrams as different symbols.

A fully customizable toolbar is available. In addition, the data editor and other windows have multiple levels of undo, allowing it to be possible to reverse changes made in the current session.
