Why metadata and self-hosting are important
Metadata, often described as everything except the content of your communications, has fewer legal protections, but can be incredibly revealing. From a list of who someone talks to and when, much can be inferred!

Video verification
In situations where extreme security is guaranteed and a recipient's identity must be verified with absolute certainty before receiving access, Nextcloud includes the first video verification industry implementation.
Video Verification enforces a Nextcloud Talk video call before accessing a share, ensuring that the recipient's identity is verified correctly. The call can be answered through the Nextcloud Talk Mobile apps as well as the web interface.
Scalability
Easy for private use
Nextcloud Talk is designed for easy installation and operation. Nextcloud hosts an STUN server for easy use behind firewalls, and we recommend installing a local TURN server to further improve connectivity. Note that calls are fully routed through a TURN server, causing a lot of network traffic.
The peer-to-peer nature of Talk inflates network traffic by creating an inbound and send flow by another participant. This imposes practical limitations on calls that depend on network resources. A typical private Nextcloud Talk configuration should handle dozens of calls with up to 4-6 participants, up to 20 if all participants have a good network connection and do not use video.
Scaling in enterprise configuration
To help with scaling, users can turn off video. Sending audio and video, as well as the computing power required to decode video streams on clients, are the biggest limiting factors, with most asymmetric Internet connections tapered in upstream bandwidth and laptops and mobile devices, especially with problems decoding 480p/30FPS multipe video streams.
The high-performance backend offered by Nextcloud partner Struktur includes a Selective Forwarding Unit (SFU) that addresses this bottleneck by receiving a flow from each user and forwarding it as needed. This allows you to scale a single call to about 30 to 50 active participants, up to hundreds when performing a webinar.
Expanding further: webinars, school classes
Webinars and other calls of the type of large-scale transmission are possible with hundreds of participants. The high-performance back-end configuration includes special features for this.
High-performance backend
The HPB also reduces the call load on the Nextcloud server by taking care of 'signaling' and optionally allows you to connect a SIP gate so that users can make phone calls over the phone.
The HPB runs on-premises, like Nextcloud itself. Customers should be aware that it has significant bandwidth and processing needs. HPB is available on Nextcloud GmbH.
