What is ORPHANED ITEMS PROCESSING?

Whether for legal reasons or as part of a larger effort to reduce storage costs, some companies want to keep Orphaned Items Processing data  that only corresponds to shortcuts in a user's mailbox. It's possible that not all items in an Orphaned Items Processing mailbox file  have a corresponding shortcut in the mailbox. Deleted shortcuts count towards orphaned items. In other words, items that the user can no longer access from their mailbox.

Orphaned item processing runs as a service on Orphaned Items Processing, versions 8 - 12 mailbox archiving servers. It correlates the shortcuts in the mailbox to their items in the mailbox file. It then processes the archived items by assigning those that do not have a shortcut corresponding to the orphaned items retention category. You set the retention period. They will now appear  in Orphaned Items Processing in a new orphaned items folder with its new retention category, giving users the ability to review and possibly restore those items before they expire.

This solution is supported by a powerful reporting engine that shows the number of items in the Orphaned Items Processing mailbox files  and the percentage of orphans. It can also be run in report-only mode to identify archived items with the potential to be marked as orphaned without modifying the retention category.
