What is Performance Sensors: Control?

Performance Sensors Control is the industry's first performance assurance controller that employs network function virtualization (NFV) to deliver advanced monitoring capabilities across the network, without the need for expensive and sophisticated test equipment.

This radically efficient approach to monitoring network performance combines all the benefits of virtualization without compromising test speed or accuracy. By eliminating key barriers to cost, scalability, and coverage to network performance visibility, service providers can now more cost-effectively ensure better quality of experience (QoE) for users.

Performance Sensors Control work in conjunction with Accedian performance modules to provide multi-stream traffic generation and the ability to monitor the performance of thousands of streams. The modules are easy to install and cost up to 90% less than existing solutions, allowing service providers to achieve the significant operational and capital efficiencies promised by an NFV architecture, while their customers benefit from a fully secured network.

Designed to fit seamlessly with a service provider's existing infrastructure and operational processes, Performance Sensors Control sensors use the same interfaces as Accedian's standalone solutions to openly interoperate with standards-based network elements, management platforms, analytics platforms, and more.

The result combines centralized control with distributed firepower. This approach is unique in its scalability and its ability to openly interact with network-wide intelligence with existing infrastructure, management, and control platforms.

Don't promise performance. Deliver that.

Performance Sensors Control sensors deliver enhanced network performance, quality of service (QoS) and quality of experience (QoE) visibility – at a fraction of the cost of traditional solutions. Applications as diverse as virtualized on-premises customer (vCPE) equipment, mobile network monitoring, and financial services transaction assurance can be implemented simply, quickly, and ubiquitously.

Virtualized performance assurance

Skylight Performance Sensor: The control was created from the code, packet processing technology, and more than forty patents Accedian introduced to transform vanilla network interface devices into fully capable performance elements. The virtualization of these exceptional devices was a natural progression. Accedian's engineering team migrated the management, test control, and result processing functions — already running on Linux on each element's CPU — to a centralized controller, while shifting wire speed processing to the next generation of FPGA-programmable processors employed in Accedian modules.

In this way, the Performance Sensors Control sensor takes over "CPU functionality" for thousands of performance modules, each acting as a "remote port." It also maintains the synchronization information of each terminal, enabling highly accurate one-way measurements in multiple remote locations.

Each module can perform service activation tests (SAT), traffic conditioning, standards-based OAM, and performance monitoring (PM) under the control and command of the sensor. Accedian's patented dual-plane packet processing architecture is maintained in the module design, allowing these miniaturized devices to generate full-line-rate test traffic and maintain thousands of performance management sessions per unit. The result covers the functionality of Accedian's performance elements in the lowest possible form factor, at a fraction of the cost.

Applications for Performance Sensors Control performance sensors include:

Service activation test

Unique to Accedian, our performance modules are capable of generating full line rate test traffic, with the ability to create and analyze up to four unique streams or run four simultaneous RFC-2544/Y.1564 service activation tests for multiple service endpoints. This allows service providers to test the actual path of the service at peak times, without affecting the network more than the service itself.

Real-time performance monitoring

Standards-based TWAMP and Service OAM (SOAM) performance monitoring can be performed in real time across multi-vendor, multi-domain, and multi-tier networks using any combination of Accedian elements, modules, software agents, and multi-vendor networking hardware that supports standards-based reflectors. Thousands of sessions can be maintained by a single instance of Skylight sensors between your virtualized modules. The real-time statistical derivatives of key metrics, including percentage and min values. /Max. / Average, are calculated by VCX in real time as results are processed, eliminating query delays when using these top-level KPIs in crash management and reporting applications.

Monitoring your hybrid cloud infrastructure with ease

Enterprise IT teams face a tough challenge when they find that the complex, high-speed data center and hybrid cloud infrastructure don't meet performance expectations. To understand what is needed to address these issues, you need instrumentation that monitors the performance of the end-to-end network, from branch sites to hybrid cloud, from physical servers to a remote workforce. Skylight delivers actionable information without disruption across all locations and layers, across the application chain. Real-time performance management analytics reveal application and network dependencies to identify and predict any impact on the user experience. Powered by exceptional scalability in the smallest possible footprint, time to value is accelerated by the simplest configuration and user experience.

Virtualization accelerates innovation

Skylight architecture is the future of Accedian solutions. It's an innovative platform, easily extended with new virtual network functions (VNFs) from Accedian and best-in-class vendors. VNFs can be developed quickly and transparently distributed by Sklight sensors. Accedian continues to introduce exceptional new monitoring capabilities on this platform, covering application-specific QoE, lossless remote packet intermediation, synchronization monitoring and delivery, service level agreement (SLA) guaranteed web application delivery, and more. Skylight performance sensors are future-proof. Join us for the journey.
