RTCR achieves its speed by taking advantage of the fact that most microelectronic masks contain large amounts of repetition.
Introduction
The RTCR (Real-Time Correction Rasterizer) program was developed to meet two important requirements of the image recorder:
Create a large area bitmap with very high resolution in a short time.
Use substrate measurements to provide real-time bitmap correction.
What drives these requirements?
Modern image recorders for printed circuit boards, IC packages, and displays have areas that start at 600 mm x 600 mm and range up to 1500 mm x 2500 mm. At the same time, the DPI for these machines increased from 4000 to 50,000 DPI. The total number of pixels can exceed one trillion.
Also consider that fine lines (5-10 um) coupled to the size of the substrate result in the need to take into account small dimensional changes in the substrate - if these changes are not accounted for, the data printed on the substrate will not align with pre-existing pathways or structures already present.
The distortion variations of the substrate from panel to panel are sufficient that it is necessary to measure known targets on each substrate after it is loaded into the image recorder. Only then can RIP calculate the distortions needed to align the bitmap on that substrate.
While RIP is creating a new bitmap, the machine is idle. The throughput is no longer limited just by the ability of the image recorder to "spray" the pixels, but becomes a combination of RIP speed and image recorder speed.
That's why we called our new RIP software the "real-time correction rasteridor."
Principle of Operation
RTCR achieves its speed by taking advantage of the fact that most microelectronic masks contain large amounts of repetition. If this can be extracted, much faster bit-copy operations can be used than brute-force raster calculations.
Distribution and memory management
The image produced by RTCR can be the size of several hundred GBytes (uncompressed). How does the program manage the available RAM (typically in the range of 32 to 64 GB) to produce this file?
