What is Smart Metering?

Smart Metering can collect the consumption, diagnostics and status data of water, gas, heat and electricity meters and store this data in a structured database for billing, troubleshooting and analysis. The Smart Metering platform  performs a function of the Meter Data Management (MDM) software, but also shares the collected data with other systems.

Implementing Automatic Meter Reading (AMR)

The architecture of the Smart Metering platform  allows you to set up a centralized data log for different types of meters with minimal effort:

  • Meters that use standard communication protocols (Modbus, Meter-Bus, DLMS/COSEM, OPC, SNMP) are supported directly
  • Other meters can be connected through custom software driver hardware protocol converters (agents)
  • Meter readings can be imported from other AMR systems through web services (SOAP, HTTP, and the like), external database (SQL) connectivity, and other protocols
  • Reads are perfectly stored in the server database
  • Flexible meter polling rules and customizable read history storage are supported
  • Integrated alerts, reports, charts, and deep data mining are enabled by the platform
  • Trends based on long-term correlation and trend forecasting allow operators to warn operators in advance if increasing consumption will exceed the Service Level Agreement (SLA) threshold
  • Detailed analysis of peak usage is available
  • Open source APIs enable flexible integration with billing systems and information delivery to customers, suppliers and service providers
  • Customization and rebranding options for meter manufacturers

Storage and analysis of counter value

The values exposed by automatic meters are typically metrics of the opposite type that represent a number of units consumed (cubic meters, kilowatt-hours) since the installation or initialization of the device. Converting these values into appropriate average consumption rates for charts, reports, and billing is a complicated and complicated task. Smart Metering Platform solves the problem of counter-to-rate conversion by employing a ready-to-use statistics module. This module offers:

  • Automatic calculation of minimum average consumption rates / hourly / daily / weekly / monthly / annual
  • Configurable accuracy loss for older statistical samples
  • Support for storing a configurable amount of "raw" reads in a classic relational database
  • Flexible charts, trends and reports on statistical meter values
  • Flexible data export to a large number of formats (CSV, XLS, XML, PDF and more)
  • Built-in support for counter overflow, negative rates of change, and counters that are zeroed in the reading
  • Support for meter-type metrics, i.e. "point averages" provided by the device
  • Storage of statistical data in a Round-Robin (RRD) database for small, unalterable file size and extremely fast access
  • User-definable dictionaries for custom measurement enrichment
  • Aggregate metrics calculated by a formula involving multiple "raw" gauge values

Advanced metering infrastructure

The concept of AMI presupposes managing meters in addition to monitoring them. It enables two-way data exchange and additional data collection. Smart Metering will enable intercommunication with smart meters to:

  • Remote meter configuration, including batch configuration
  • Real-time meter operations (e.g., remote shutdown)
  • Receive and process device-generated alerts, such as leak detection, reverse flow, low battery, or tampering
  • Collecting the statistics for the time/usage rate
