Entrust Datacard's PASSCODE SMS has an advantage over traditional two-factor authentication solutions that, as the term suggests, are simply based on two factors; something you know (username and password) and something you have (a unique password). The SMS PASSCODE solution analyzes several factors surrounding each specific login. These factors include items such as session ID, network IP and geographic location, number of successful logins, type of system accessed, logon time, and device being used. All of these factors include a context that helps determine the level of trust and whether the user should be authenticated or blocked.

SMS PASSCODE is adaptable, real-time, challenge-based, session-specific, and leverages contextual information by validating the user, protecting them from identity theft and modern Internet threats.
Unlike solutions that rely on pre-issued codes, SMS PASSCODE generates the codes only when a challenge (username and password are validated).
All access codes are generated in real time at the login point. No pre-issued access code. No seed files to be hacked.

For example, if the user is logging in to a trusted location, such as the comfort of their home (from where they previously logged in), an OTP will not be requested for authentication. On the other hand, if they are trying to log in while traveling, i.e. from a lobby or airport to a hotel with public Wi-Fi, an OTP would be mandatory to get access.
