What is Spotmask?

Spotmask is a plug-in for Autodesk 3ds Max that renders additional precision elements in mental ray:

  • World Position Pass (scene location information)
  • UVW Passthrough (Texture Mapping Information)
  • Normal passage (normal surface data)
  • Speed pass (speed pass for motion blur effects)
  • Curvature passage (convex and concave output)
  • Depth pass (depth shader)

These advanced output passes allow 3D artists to make flexible adjustments to their images and animations during post-processing and composition.

What are the rendering elements of Spotmask?

World Position Pass:

Spotmask's worldwide position pass gives 3D artists the ability to better select and retouch any region of the image or animation sequence after rendering.

Unlike Z depth, world position data saves location data regardless of camera view: Even if the camera moves or the object is out of camera view, it still remains masked.

That way, an artist can modify color, blur, and visibility, or add any effect to selected areas of the rendered 3D environment.

UVW-Pass:

Have you ever wished to change the textures of your scene after it was rendered - without rendering it all over again?

UVW-Pass is your perfect solution: just add the Spotmask UVW-Pass rendering element to the mental ray and it will provide the necessary mapping information. With this image information, you can access and change each texture of your image or animation.

Velocity Pass:

Motion blur is undoubtedly one of the most time-consuming components in animation rendering.

While 3ds Max already offers 2 options for generating speed data by default, Spotmask offers a significant improvement to camera movement. The default speed rendering element does not generate visualization-dependent data and completely ignores the camera's movement. Only works for scenes with a still camera. Buffer G's speed channel considers camera movements and creates view-dependent data, but camera movement is considered incorrectly and blur moves in the wrong directions.

Normal Pass:

This rendering element allows you to store the directions in which all surfaces are facing. This data can be used later to generate accurate reflections for light sources that did not exist during the original rendering. Spotmask exports normal directions in raw and stuck color space from the world's mental ray space, object space, and camera space.

Curvature Pass:

Spotmask implements a very accurate and customizable curvature rendering pass. The Curvature rendering element determines how intensely the surface of objects bends at a given location. It also differentiates between convex and concave angles.

This information can be used during postprocessing to detect and modify grooves and grooves in objects. For example, artists can control two different topology properties in the final image: geometry areas that are "bulging" (convex) or "inserted" (concave). It can enrich your final composition with a beautiful AO-fake appearance or extra color details in crumpled mesh sections.

Thickness Pass:

This rendering element determines the volume thickness of objects on its surface.

This information can be used later to add modifications, such as transparency or coloring, to objects that consider their volume rather than uniforms.
