What is StarWind Virtual SAN (VSAN)?

For Hyper-V

No restrictions on # of soques, cores, or resources. Editions vary only by usable capacity and number of nodes per license. StarWind Virtual SAN for Hyper-V is installed as a native Windows application directly on the parent partition of Hyper-V. It also integrates with Windows Server security and management tools.

For VSphere

The derived licensing of the system, capacity limitations, and resource constraints have disappeared forever. StarWind Virtual SAN for vSphere is a Linux VM ready to be installed on cluster nodes. Once installed, Virtual SAN creates a fault-tolerant storage pool available for the entire vSphere cluster. VSAN for vSphere users gets unrestricted features, storage capacity, and great value for money.

System Requirements

  • For Hyper-V
    • CPU: Minimum of a 1.7 GHz physical processor
    • RAM: 4GB. If you are using asynchronous caching or replication, an appropriate amount of RAM must be added
    • Network: 2 NIC interfaces (StarWind Synchronization and Heartbeat / iSCSI traffic) + 1 NIC (Management). It is recommended to configure jumbo frames (MTU) for 9000 for iSCSI and Synchronization traffic
    • Network bandwidth: Synchronous replication: Minimum latency requirements of 1 GbE or higher:
    • Hypervisor: Supported version of Windows Server: 2012 or later
    • Storage: 3 GB of disk space reserved for installation and registration. StarWind virtual disks must reside on the separate partition of the StarWind installation disk. The hardware RAID controller is highly recommended. Microsoft Storage Spaces are supported
  • For VSphere

CPU: Minimum 4 1.7 GHz virtual processors reserved

RAM: If you are using caching, an appropriate amount of RAM must be assigned

Network: 2 NIC interfaces (StarWind Synchronization and Heartbeat / iSCSI traffic) + 1 NIC (Management). It is recommended to set jumbo frames (MTU) to 9000 for iSCSI and Synchronization traffic.

Network bandwidth: Synchronous replication with minimum latency requirements of 1 GbE or higher:

Hypervisor: VSphere version supported: 5.5 or later

Storage: 20 GB virtual disk reserved for the OUm. StarWind virtual disks must reside on the separate partition of the StarWind installation disk. All virtual disks must be Thick Provision Eager Zeroed or the entire HBA/RAID controller must be passed to the Virtual Machine.
