The unique instruments of the COLLECTION OF VI elements have long been a trade secret for composers and sound designers, capturing their imagination with their archaic sounds ranging from ethereal tremors to thunderous blows. For the SYNCHRON-ized version, we expanded the sound amplitude of the library, not only adding more extraordinary instruments, but also creating a series of out-of-this-world sound effects using Synchron Player's extensive plug-in and routing options. New instruments include a second lithophone, another waterphone, several tam-tams, rails, thunder leaves, crotals, ocean drums and many more.
Sound sources of SYNCHRON-ized Elements include water (Waterphones), metal (singing bowls, crotals, steel rails, tam-tams), stone (lithophones) and glass (glass harmonica, verophone, bottles). With a variety of mixer presets included, each instrument can be placed in nine different positions in the main hall of synchron stage vienna for perfect, ready-to-use sound.
The Waterphone was invented by Richard Waters in 1967, inspired by African kalimba, nail violin and Tibetan water drum. The instrument consists of a closed body filled with water of stainless steel or bronze and a hollow cylindrical neck. Metal rods of different lengths are fastened vertically around the neck and are usually scraped with a bow. The sound can be modified by turning the body full of water. Like the triangle and pictome, the waterphone's high-frequency sound can be heard even when the entire orchestra is playing. The Bass Waterphone is a particularly large model with a diameter of 35 cm (13 3/4).
The glass harmonica was very popular in Mozart's time. Hemispherical glass bowls rotate around a horizontal axis driven by a pedal. Placing wet fingers in the bowls as they rotate, they leave the glass in beautiful ether tones. The verrophone consists of chromatic glass tubes arranged vertically as the resonator tubes of macete instruments. Glass tubes are rubbed with wet fingers to create their unique sound. The musical cups are filled with varying amounts of water and rubbed with wet fingers too, but their sound is much more delicate and shimmering compared to the verrophone. Glass instruments are rounded by bottles that are blown with different techniques, including the fluttering tongue.
The sound stone bars of the lithophone are made of basalt, granite, marble and other minerals. The lithophonewas introduced to the orchestra by Carl Orff (1895-1982) in his Greek drama "Antigone". The Great Litophone is a unique instrument that looks like a marimba and has a tonal range of almost five octaves. Due to the resonance tubes, the ceiling possibilities range from extremely soft, full and dark tones to a strong and bright tone.
The metal category includes steel rails beaten with a steel hammer, thunder blades in various sizes and touch techniques, crotais and a set of Japanese singing bowls. The tam-tam series includes instruments with different diameters, ranging from 85 cm to 200 cm XXL tam-tam. The latter was hit with metal sticks, cardboard and jigsaw blades, hit and rubbed with chains and mistreated with flyswatters, an egg cutter and even a massage rod.
The collection is completed by a number of exotic percussion instruments such as ocean drums, spring drums, cuícas, waldteufel, as well as bull roar and lion roar.
In addition to the "classic" presets, SYNCHRON-ized Elements offers a wide variety of "FX Presets" created by our experienced sound experts and engineers. Notably, the "Combined FX" category with a total of 24 newly created instruments made by combining different Elements is a treasure trove of fresh, organic sounds and effects for adventurous composers and sound designers.
