Vienna Synchronous Player

Synchron Percussion I works with the Vienna Synchron Player, a dedicated sample player with an all-new engine built from scratch. The powerful player delivers unprecedented streaming performance, with hundreds of voices streaming simultaneously - an important feature for handling synchron percussion's various microphone positions. The integrated mixer comes with a wide rack of effects and offers a number of presets, covering the full range of natural recordings uncompressed to powerful blows and epic impacts!

12 microphones

Each instrument was recorded with 12 microphones. You can select from four microphone positions (Standard Library) or seven different microphone positions (Full Library) and mix them to your liking, directly in the Vienna Synchron Player. Use the included and perfectly adjusted presets as a starting point for your own mixes. The natural volume envelopes and the sonic character of the instruments remained untouched during recording and editing. Stage A performances were captured in stereo using a Decca tree, and additional microphone arrays were used for 5.1 surround and Auro 3D 9.1.

Microphone positions of the complete library:

1.     Close microphone - mono

2.     Medium layer microphone - stereo (L/R)

3.     Main microphone / environment - Decca Tree Stereo (L / R)

4.     Main microphone / environment - Decca Tree Mono (center)

5.     Main Surround - Stereo (L/R)

6.     High Stereo (3D) - Stereo (L / R)

7.     High Surround (3D) - Estéreo (L / R)

The Standard Library includes positions 1-4.

Immersive Sound and Auro 3D

Auro 3D is an immersive audio technology that allows three-dimensional sound perception. Belgian company Auro Technologies developed this technology based on a special speaker configuration, adding four additional speakers to a 5.1 surround configuration. These speakers (called "heights") are located above the front and surround speakers and generate acoustic reflexes that are naturally perceived due to the fact that the sounds originate both around and above the listener. Thanks to the comprehensive selection of discrete audio channels from Synchron Percussion I (Full Library), you can mix your instruments in Auro 3D and also in Dolby Atmos.

128 variations per hit

A tremendous amount of time and effort was spent to record all 16 percussion instruments. This tour de force was only possible because all the instruments, as well as synchron stage Vienna itself, were owned by the Vienna Symphonic Library. The results are really impressive. Synchron Percussion I overused with its huge dynamic range and liveliness. With up to 16 speeds and up to 8 variations of each blow, and open joints, secco (interrupted release) and co-tightening (paddeated), there are 128 variations of each blow! In addition, we use various types of mallets, sticks, rods, brushes, hammers and more to obtain a comprehensive library of transients and timbres.

100 hours alone were spent capturing all the subtle nuances of the five eardrums. Since each tympanum drum has been sampled in its full range of execution, any given height can now be played by up to three different instruments. As a result of the unique and all-new launch sample technology, booming and diminuting rolls that are available in various lengths and intensities can be stopped at any time with the corresponding launch sample being triggered. Glissandos are supplied up to a sixth higher in three speeds, and the innovative "Performance Range Rollers" allow you to play unlimited legato in up to a fifth range.

The celesta was played using a sampling robot, which captured the subtlety of this beautiful instrument with 36 layers of speed meticulously sampled.

Extensive features for sound design

For almost all instruments, we record special effects sounds that lend themselves well to the creation of entirely new organic soundscapes. The glockenspiel, xylophone and tamtams were touched with a double bass arch, as another of many examples. The results are unique sounds that will motivate you to experiment and serve as a source of inspiration for your compositions.

The recording stage as an instrument

Synchron Stage Vienna, located at the Wiener Rosenhügel, is large enough to accommodate a 130-member orchestra and has proven to be a remarkable space, not only for recording movie music, but also for sample sessions. During the 1960s, eminent classical artists such as Karl Böhm, Herbert von Karajan, Yehudi Menuhin, Sviatoslav Richter and Mstislav Rostropovich loved to use the excellent acoustics of this ancient "Synchronhalle" for their now legendary recordings.

The colossal room-in-room construction, built on a massive concrete base, combined with soundproofing and a specially designed air conditioning system, results in a ridiculously low noise floor of 16 dBA, even with the air conditioning running!

Main stage A has a reverberation time of 1.6 to 1.8 seconds and, in contrast to other scoring stages, there is no masking effect on low frequencies. All instruments have a strong and warm sound, while providing an excellent location, both in depth and in the stereo panorama. Especially at the low and middle levels, the room itself becomes a wonderful instrument. His high energy level at very low frequencies was beautifully harnessed for the bass drum, which was recorded in its normal tuning, then loosened to capture thunderous bass that reverberated through the hall. But pay attention to the volume - these ultra-low frequencies can damage the speakers if the volume is too high!

Perfect Weather Conditions

Synchron Stage Vienna is equipped with a sophisticated heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system that offers absolutely consistent air quality (humidity and temperature) between the large Stage A and the percussion tank. Therefore, each instrument is in perfect condition for performance, day and night, session after session.
