What is virtual instructor-led training?

Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT) is when an instructor facilitates a training session for a group of students or an individual in a virtual environment. Similar to traditional instructor-led training, VILT is synchronous, collaborative, and happens in real time.

Learning professionals choose to move to virtual classrooms for a number of reasons: to save costs, accommodate a remote audience, give flexibility or even new technologies.

As with most of our learning technologies, we believe that instructor-led virtual training is best when used as part of a combined learning program - mixing different learning styles and activities to get the best results.

Types of instructor-led virtual training?

Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT) is taking material from traditional instructor-led training programs and using them in a virtual environment. The most important aspect is that students have real-time access to the instructor for feedback and discussion.

You can make your instructor-led virtual training attractive to your students, including activities throughout the training session. Switching between lectures, exercise, activities, and practices are the best ways to keep your students engaged and able to retain information.

VILT can be accomplished in a few different ways:

  • Webinar - online via videoconferencing
  • One-to-One - A Student for an Instructor
  • Small Group - A small group of students with an instructor in a classroom
  • Lecture - A large group of students with an instructor
  • Workshop - Practical training
  • Virtual classrooms - online meetings with immersive technology

Instructor-led training conversion in instructor-led virtual training

You may already have effective training content for your program, there's no reason to rule out what works. But you need to adapt to your new normal.

If you are converting existing classroom content into a virtual session, consider splitting the information and offering several shorter sessions. Shorter sessions allow you to provide valuable information without burdening the student. If you combine shorter sessions with brief offline activities, you can even create opportunities to promote knowledge transfer and enhance learning.
