Degrees of freedom, or DoF, for short, refers to the number of ways a rigid object can move in a 3D space. In other words, DoF refers to how humans can move in a VR environment. There are 6 degrees of freedom, just as there are six ways an object can move. With VR, you can have 3DoF or 6DoF. Here are the differences:
Full VR / 6DoF / Six Degrees of Freedom
Allows a person with a headset to move freely and organically in a virtual environment. Students can move back and forth, up and down, right and left, while observing and interacting with objects placed in the environment, just as they would if those objects were real.
360º VR / 3DoF / Three Degrees of Freedom
Suitable for sitting or sitting environments, because the position from the point of view of your students is fixed. Students can look left and right, up and down and turn left and right while interacting with the environment through the look control or a laser pointer controller.
