What is WMA to MP3 Converter?

WMA to MP3 Converter converts WMA to MP3 and vice versa. The software also converts WMV (Windows Media Video) into MP3 and ADVANCED Systems Format (ASF) into MP3. WMA can encode sampled audio signals up to 48 kHz with up to two discrete (stereo) channels. WMA introduced variable bit rate (VBR) and average bit rate (ABR) encoding techniques into the MS encoder, although both were technically supported by the original format. WMA has also added support for low-delay audio, which reduces latency for encoding and decoding.

What is WMA?

Windows Media Audio (WMA) is an audio data compression technology developed by Microsoft. The name can be used to refer to your audio file format or your audio codecs. It is a proprietary technology that is part of the Windows Media framework. WMA consists of four distinct codecs. The original WMA codec, known simply as WMA, was conceived as a competitor to the popular MP3 and RealAudio codecs. WMA Pro, a latest and most advanced codec, supports high-resolution, multichannel audio. A lossless codec, WMA Lossless, compresses audio data without loss of audio fidelity (the regular WMA format shows losses). WMA Voice, focused on voice content, applies compression using a range of low bit rates. A WMA file is, in most circumstances, contained in the Advanced Systems Format (ASF), a Proprietary Microsoft container format for digital audio or digital video. The ASF container format specifies how metadata about the file should be encoded, similar to the ID3 tags used by MP3 files. Metadata can include the song name, track number, artist name, and audio normalization values. This container can optionally support digital rights management (DRM) using a combination of elliptical curve encryption key exchange, DES block cipher, a custom block cipher, RC4 stream cipher, and sha-1 hashing function. See Windows Media DRM for more information. This container can optionally support digital rights management (DRM) using a combination of elliptical curve encryption key exchange, DES block cipher, a custom block cipher, RC4 stream cipher, and sha-1 hashing function.

What is MP3?

MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 Audio Layer III, more commonly referred to as MP3, is a digital audio encoding format that uses a form of lossy data compression. MP3 files are the most commonly distributed audio files in the world. The MP3 file format allows an audio file to be reduced in size, making it easier to download the file from the Internet and store it on a portable media device. The MP3 file format is commonly used to store and play audio files on MP3 players, iPods and mobile phones. Audio files saved in MP3 format are compressed. When burning audio data to a standard CD, one minute of data will take up approximately 10 MB of disk space. With an MP3 file, however, one minute of audio will take up only 1 MB of space. Although there is some loss in sound quality when burning MP3 files, it is generally not noticeable to the average listener. The MPEG-1 standard does not include an accurate specification for an MP3 encoder, but provides examples of psychoacoustic models, rate loop, and the like in the non-normative part of the original standard. These suggested implementations are currently pretty out dated. Standard implementers should create their own appropriate algorithms to remove parts of the information from the audio input. As a result, there are many different MP3 encoders available, each producing different quality files. The views are widely available, so it's easy for a potential user of an encoder to research the best choice. An encoder that is proficient at encoding at higher bit rates (such as LAME) is not necessarily as good at lower bit rates.
