What is XLS ReadWrite?

A complete solution for working with MS Excel files.

Native access to Excel files. The user does not need to have Excel or any other software installed.

XLS ReadWrite uses its own memory manager that is optimized for storing cell values. This means that you can work with larger files. If your files don't already fit in memory, there are Direct Read and Direct Write modes, which allow you to process files to disk.

Stability. One of the main goals achieved by XLS ReadWrite was to create a product that does not corrupt Excel files and does not change any data in the file. The mechanism that handles XLSX files is automatically constructed from the file format specifications with a special tool developed. This will ensure maximum compatibility.

No runtime rate for the component. Full source code included.

Key features of XLS ReadWrite

Read and write any cell value:

  • Numeric, string, Boolean, and error cells.
  • Full support for formulas. You can use the same Excel functions. Formulas with references to external workbooks are also supported. You can even read the result of an external referral.
  • Cells are accessed in the same way as the TStringGrid that comes with Delphi, or by treating the cell as a string, such as: 'D7'.
  • Read cell values as a string formatted according to cell rules.

Performance:

  • XLS ReadWrite is designed with optimal performance in mind. Because Excel 2007 files allow up to 16,000 x 1,000,000 cells, performance is important.
  • Read and write the speed of Excel 2007 files at least twice as fast as Excel. Because these files are compressed XML, both the decompressor and the XML parser must be fast.
  • XLS ReadWrite uses the memory manager itself. Memory usage should not be more than half of what Excel uses, and most of the time it is much smaller than that.
  • Due to the fact that pre-Excel 2007 files are binary files, they are read and written much faster.

Format the cells as you want:

  • Formatting is easy. When you address the cell, you can access the formatting properties for it.
  • XLS ReadWrite has objects for formatting a worksheet in the same way as the Excel format cells dialog. You can format cells or cell areas in the same way as Excel.
  • Support for all Excel formatting options.
  • Use merged cells.

Access all print options:

  • Select the paper size and set the margins.
  • Set the header and footer, including formatting codes.
  • Define print areas.
  • Define pages.

XLS ReadWrite has full unicode support:

Because all strings are Unicode, you will have no problems with characters other than English.

Direct Reading and Direct Recording:

You can read and write cells directly from the file without storing them in memory. Because an Excel 2007 file can contain up to 16 billion cells, this can be important if you want to save memory.

Drawing objects:

Enter all types of drawing objects and simple lines for self-shapes.

Cells and text boxes:

Create and edit text boxes and cell annotations as you wish.

Graphics:

Create charts with the same Excel options.

PivotTables:

Ease in creating pivot tables in the same way as in Excel.

Copy / Move / Delete:

  • Cells can be copied, moved, and deleted with the same Excel behavior.
  • Rows and columns can be copied and moved as well.
  • Copy/move between sheets.
  • Whole sheets can be copied.

Use named areas/cells:

  • Names can be used wherever you want.
  • Access cells through the name are easy.
  • Support for embedded special names.

All types of hyperlinks are supported:

  • Web and email address.
  • Local files.
  • Server files.
  • Spreadsheet references.

Encrypted documents.

You can read and write encrypted files. This assumes, of course, that you know the password of the file you read.

Calculation:

  • Quick calculation engine with support for all standard Excel formulas.
  • The calculation engine will calculate the dependent cells, if any.
  • References to external workbooks will be read. This is done with a special quick search routine.

Células Rich Text:

To make it easier to create cells with multiple font formatting, cells can be read and written in Rich Text (RTF) format or with html-like tags.

Macros VBA

Macros in files can be read and written. Those that are created with XLSReadWriteII can be assigned to control objects such as buttons, combo boxes, etc.

Import and export:

Import data from:

  • Documentos Open Office Calc.
  • CSV and other text files with automatic character detection for field separator, decimal separator, and text quotation string character.
  • Databases.

Export data to:

  • CSV text files.
  • HTML files.

And more:

  • Autofiltros.
  • Cell validations.
  • Conditional formats
  • Merged cells.
