What is Rundeck Enterprise?
Rundeck Enterprise is the former name of PagerDuty Runbook Automation Self-Hosted, the self-managed commercial edition of the operational runbook automation platform built by Rundeck, Inc. and acquired by PagerDuty, Inc. in October 2020. Nothing was discontinued: the product remains under active development, with 6.1 as the current release, and still installs in the customer's own data center or private cloud.
What changed was the name — and not only this one. The entire product line was rebranded between 2021 and 2022, which explains why so many people search for terms that no longer exist on the vendor's site. From Rundeck to PagerDuty: the name map
According to the official release notes, the renaming was announced with version 4.0 in March 2022, alongside the portfolio change: the line formerly known as Rundeck became PagerDuty Process Automation and later simply Automation within the Operations Cloud.
- Rundeck Enterprise → PagerDuty Process Automation On Prem → PagerDuty Runbook Automation Self-Hosted, the edition installed in your own environment.
- Rundeck Cloud → PagerDuty Runbook Automation. Announced in November 2021 and offered in early access, this SaaS edition reached the market on March 22, 2022 already under the new name.

- Rundeck remains the name of the community distribution, open source and free, under the Apache 2.0 license.
- The old name survives in technical details: the license is still called rundeckpro-license.key, the remote execution agent is the Enterprise Runner, and support is Enterprise Support.
What open source Rundeck does not include
The community distribution delivers the automation core: Workflow Execution, Community Plugins, standardization of IT workflow execution, Key and Password Encryption, basic ops scheduling, Job Activity Log and Key Storage. Differences between the commercial editions
Both commercial editions share the same feature set and differ in who operates the infrastructure. In Runbook Automation Self-Hosted — the former Rundeck Enterprise — the install lives in your data center or private cloud, and the customer manages patching, updates and resiliency. In Runbook Automation SaaS, PagerDuty hosts the platform, takes on patching, monitoring and compliance, and answers for high availability with a 99.9% SLA.
System requirements
From version 6.0 onward, Runbook Automation Self-Hosted requires Java 17 as the minimum runtime, with declared support through Java 25; the recommended distribution is Azul Zulu OpenJDK. Installation is by system package (RPM or DEB), the launcher or a Docker image, and root is not required.
The embedded H2 database is for testing only, because it is not resilient to a forced shutdown. In production use MariaDB, MySQL or PostgreSQL; a JDBC driver is also bundled for MSSQL, while Oracle and Amazon Aurora work with an additional driver. Version 6.0 added MySQL 8.4 support and replaced the legacy metrics with Spring Boot Actuator and Prometheus. In a cluster, the Enterprise Cluster accepts only one active database instance, with latency recommended under 40 ms.
Editions available today
There are three. Rundeck community is free and self-installed. Runbook Automation Self-Hosted is the commercial edition installed in the customer's environment, successor to Rundeck Enterprise. PagerDuty Runbook Automation is the SaaS edition managed by the vendor.
Both commercial editions integrate with the Operations Cloud through the Automation Actions connector, which requires the PD Automation Actions user license.
How much does Rundeck Enterprise cost?
The commercial edition is licensed per named user, with a platform fee added to the user count in the SaaS edition; the Self-Hosted edition is sized on request. The model is annual (subscription), with a multi-year option. The license key is the rundeckpro-license.key file, and a key issued for Rundeck 2.x does not work on 3.x or later.
There is no single list figure because the investment depends on sizing: number of users, edition chosen, number of environments and runners, need for PD Automation Actions licenses, and whether it is a new purchase or a renewal.
